In short

It depends on your nationality. Many countries enter Panama as tourists without a visa, with just a passport; others need a stamped visa, issued by the consulate, or an authorized visa, which also requires approval from the National Immigration Service. Immigration has confirmed, for example, that Venezuelans and Cubans need a stamped visa. Always check with the Panamanian consulate before you buy your ticket.

What does the tourist visa require?

  • Visa application form.
  • A passport valid for at least 3 months, original and full copy.
  • A ticket or flight reservation for your departure or onward travel.
  • An ID or residence document from the country where you live.
  • Proof of funds of at least USD 500: bank statement, credit card, employment letter, proof of pension or similar.
  • Where applicable, a hotel reservation or a letter of invitation from a resident, a Panamanian or a company in Panama.

Frequently asked questions

Can I apply for residency if I entered as a tourist?

Yes, most residency applications are filed while you are in Panama, through a lawyer, before your tourist stay expires (see National Immigration Service).

Can I work in Panama as a tourist?

No. To work you need a residency that allows it and a work permit, and to work for employers abroad, the remote worker visa.

How much does the tourist visa cost?

If you apply with the National Immigration Service in Panama, the fee is USD 50. At a consulate it may have its own fee.

Can someone in Panama invite me?

Yes. A Panamanian, a resident or a company can submit a letter of invitation with their documents and proof of their solvency, such as a bank letter.
