In short

Panama offers several residency options linked to an investment, a dollar-based economy and a territorial tax system. Here is how residency, buying property and protecting your assets fit together.

Frequently asked questions

Does buying a home give you the right to residency?

Not on its own. Some residency options accept a real estate investment if it reaches a minimum amount and meets other requirements. If residency is your goal, structure the purchase with it in mind from the start.

Can foreigners buy property in Panama?

Yes, generally with the same rights as Panamanians, with restrictions in specific areas such as those near the borders and some islands. Before buying, check in the Public Registry that the property has a title deed and not just possessory rights.

How is income I earn abroad taxed in Panama?

As a general rule, Panama taxes only Panamanian-source income. What you earn abroad may still be taxed in your home country under its law and any applicable treaties; it is one of the points we review in the consultation.

What currency is used in Panama?

The US dollar, which circulates alongside the balboa, Panama's own currency, at the same value. If your income arrives in another currency, plan for exchange and transfer fees.

Do I need to speak Spanish to live in Panama?

Spanish is the official language and the one used in government procedures: foreign documents must be submitted in Spanish or with an official translation. In the capital and in areas with many foreign residents, services in English are common.
